A review of waste and recycling services has indicated that a recycling facility might face permanent closure. The cabinet of Cheltenham Borough Council is scheduled to convene on November 26 to deliberate on the future of the Household Recycling Centre situated on Swindon Road. The site is estimated to require a £1 million renovation, including substantial ground works and a new concrete pad, to comply with current regulations and continue its operations. Izaac Tailford, representing the council, stated: “We understand that the household recycling centre has been much loved by residents in the past and we know that locally, people want to recycle even more and are very environmentally aware.” He added: “In recent years, the amount of legislative and regulatory change relating to waste and recycling has been significant. “In light of this, we must recognise that the recycling centre needs major modernisation and investment, hence the proposal to close it whilst we take the necessary time to consider options and liaise with partners, including the county council, about options for the site.” The upcoming budget report and its associated consultation, scheduled to commence in December and conclude in January 2025, will incorporate the extended closure of the facility. An additional public consultation will be integrated into the planned residents’ survey in 2025.
