An artwork depicting Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis has been unveiled on the exterior of the studio where the group recorded one of its most memorable tracks. The song “Atmosphere” was recorded at Cargo Studios in Rochdale during 1979, the year preceding the Manchester-born singer’s passing. The portrayal of Curtis was painted on the structure, currently known as Voltalab Sound Studios, by Stockport-based artist Jack Brett, who stated his intention was to express the singer’s “frenetic energy and incredible power”. He added, “I wanted to capture some of that angelic, heavenly movement so it’s commemorating him and that song.” Rochdale Council and Voltalab, which succeeded Cargo Studios, jointly commissioned the artwork. This location served as a recording venue for numerous post-punk legends from the north west of England, such as the Fall, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. According to Mr Brett, “Joy Division recorded Atmosphere here, which happens to be one of my favourite songs.” He further commented, “I think the lyrics, especially the lyric ‘Don’t walk away in silence’, is really poignant.” This recently installed mural marks the second depiction of Curtis visible in the area, with the initial one located on the exterior of a pub situated close to Piccadilly Railway Station.
