Warwickshire’s wicketkeeper, Michael Burgess, has declared his retirement from professional cricket, stating his intention to pursue opportunities beyond the sport. He achieved a career-high score of 178 runs against Surrey in 2022. The 30-year-old participated in 130 matches across all formats for the Bears, accumulating 3,000 runs over 65 first-class appearances. Prior to joining Warwickshire, Burgess played for Leicestershire and Sussex. He departed Sussex during the 2019 season to join Edgbaston, where he contributed to the team’s County Championship victory in 2021. “I know it will come as a surprise to many people around the club. But I’ve decided the time is right to step away from the game and pursue other opportunities,” Burgess stated on the Warwickshire website, external. He added, “Winning the Championship in 2021 will always be an incredibly special part of my career and something I’ll forever be proud of.” During this summer’s County Championship, Burgess scored 745 runs, including two centuries, while Warwickshire concluded the season in seventh place in Division One. Performance director Gavin Larsen commented, “We’ve spoken to Michael regularly since he first raised this with us. We wanted to make sure it was the right decision for him and if there was anything we could do to as a club. But in the end, we’ve mutually agreed to release him from the final year of his contract.” Larsen further praised Burgess, stating, “What I loved about Michael was his combativeness and toughness with the bat when presented with challenging situations. I’ve lost count of the number of times he has rescued a Championship innings, batting superbly with the tail.” He concluded, “He’s a gifted wicket-keeper who always showed the ability to deliver classy performance behind the stumps. There’s no doubt we’ll miss his all-round skills.” In related news, Liam Norwell, a former fast bowler for Warwickshire, has been compelled to retire from the sport at 32 years old due to medical issues. Norwell achieved a remarkable career-best performance of 9-62 against Hampshire on the concluding day of the 2022 County Championship, a feat that secured the Bears’ retention of their top-flight status. However, this match marked his last first-class appearance. Despite playing three second XI games this summer, he was released by the club when the season concluded.
