Police intercepted a van driver who was consuming breakfast cereal while operating their vehicle. This incident was one of over 190 infractions documented by law enforcement agencies throughout Yorkshire during a month-long enforcement initiative targeting key roads in the area. Utilizing HGV cabs supplied by National Highways, officers also observed and recorded drivers texting with both hands and individuals making rude gestures when identified by police. Insp Clive Turner stated: “Holding a driving licence is a privilege and not a right, however a small minority of people take it for granted.” Personnel from North, South, and West Yorkshire Police, alongside counterparts from Northumbria and Durham, conducted patrols on roads such as the A1, M1, and M18. These patrols took place between 4 November and 13 December as part of Operation Tramline. From their elevated vantage point in the passenger seat of the HGV, police officers were able to observe and document individuals violating traffic regulations. The driver consuming cereal was identified in North Yorkshire. Also in North Yorkshire, a driver was observed making an offensive gesture upon realizing they had been recorded without a seatbelt. Concurrently, video footage obtained by South Yorkshire Police depicted an HGV driver operating a tablet or laptop computer while driving. Additionally, a Ford Focus driver was apprehended using both hands to text on a mobile phone. During the operation, upon the recording of an infraction, officers in a separate police vehicle were notified, and the suspected driver was stopped to allow for enforcement action. According to a National Highways spokesperson, nearly 50,000 offences have been documented since the initiative commenced in 2015. Insp Turner, affiliated with North Yorkshire Police, commented: “It is always disappointing to find so many drivers who are prepared to put their life and others lives at risk for the sake of not wearing a seat belt or checking their mobile phones.” Readers can access highlights from South Yorkshire on BBC Sounds and view the latest episode of Look North.
