Newcastle United’s manager, Eddie Howe, disclosed in a post-match interview with BBC Sport that he had made minor adjustments to his midfield setup for the team’s 4-0 victory against Ipswich Town. Alan Shearer, a former striker for the Magpies, offered his analysis of these modifications on Match of the Day, stating they “helped the whole team.” He elaborated: “In recent games, Eddie Howe has put Sandro Tonali in the number six role and moved Bruno Guimaraes a little bit further forward to give him a little bit more freedom to get into forward positions.” This tactical adjustment evidently benefited both players involved and, crucially, the entire squad. Shearer noted that Tonali’s presence in midfield is highly effective, and he appears to find the role significant. He added that Tonali has improved in this position due to his suitable skillset. Frequently, upon receiving possession, Tonali aims to advance the ball quickly, often within one or two touches, which significantly aids the team’s attacking players. Furthermore, Tonali is required to contribute defensively, a task he has demonstrably fulfilled in recent matches. The synergy between Tonali and Guimaraes in their respective positions was described as “absolutely superb.” This involved Guimaraes initiating forward passes at times, and Tonali doing so at others. Bruno Guimaraes displayed considerable astuteness in executing his responsibilities within this role, and he appears to embrace it, as it evidently complements his playing style.
