An independent live music establishment in Kent is preparing to commemorate a takeover agreement that has guaranteed its longevity. The Booking Hall in Dover, which has previously hosted artists such as Don Broco and Frank Turner, is now under the ownership of Music Venue Properties (MVP). This acquisition by MVP, an entity established by the Music Venue Trust, followed a fundraising initiative. The MVT, a charitable organization, aims to safeguard UK music venues by providing them with long-term stability. Stuart Cameron, owner of The Booking Hall, stated: “To know that the venue is secure for many generations to come is a great relief and definitely something to celebrate.” The venue possesses a standing capacity for 280 individuals, and its structure is over 165 years old. Mr. Cameron explained: “Following the owner’s decision earlier this year to put the building up for sale, we were trying to purchase the building ourselves, but did not have the capital up front for a deposit.” He further added: “Without Music Venue Properties stepping in to purchase the venue, the most likely outcome would have been a property developer turning the building into flats or offices.” MVP has previously acquired three other venues in the UK and intends to continue purchasing grassroots music locations. Matthew Otridge, MVP’s chief operating officer, commented that it was “crucial” for the charitable organization to intervene to “safeguard this vital community hub”. According to MVP, the change in ownership frees the venue from concerns about commercial demands, enabling it to concentrate on assisting local musical talent. Steve Harris, the renowned Iron Maiden musician, whose side project British Lion performed a fundraising concert to aid MVP in acquiring the venue, described the takeover as “fantastic news” and stated: “Glad we could be of help!”Topper Headon, the drummer for the iconic rock band The Clash, remarked that the new ownership represented “exactly what Dover needs”. A celebratory gathering is scheduled for Thursday at the location, featuring performances by the Folkestone-based rock duo Sand and Stone and the Margate rock ensemble Black Roze.
