A local authority in Surrey has formally approved a new air quality action plan (AQAP). Spelthorne Borough Council’s environment and sustainability committee has given its consent for the plan’s implementation, which is scheduled to remain active until 2029. Key components of the strategy encompass encouraging pedestrian and bicycle travel over vehicle use, establishing an air quality alert system, backing an initiative for Spelthorne’s inclusion in Transport for London’s zone six, and collaborating with Heathrow to mitigate airport emissions. The AQAP is slated for an annual assessment, including a review of its progress and subsequent reporting to the environment and sustainability committee. The council is legally mandated to develop an AQAP, detailing the measures it intends to undertake to enhance and protect air quality within the Spelthorne area. The AOAP was revised following a six-week period of public consultation. For further engagement, BBC Surrey is available on Facebook and X.
