A national park authority has given its approval for a series of road alterations, which are integral to a multimillion-pound initiative situated on greenfield property. These proposed changes, affecting the A591 and Thwaites Lane, are components of the Windermere Gateway Project and are essential for transforming the Orrest Head Farm site, where the construction of 250 residences is envisioned. The development committee of the Lake District National Park Authority granted approval for the proposals, notwithstanding 36 objections, one of which came from the water utility company United Utilities. The committee’s chair stated that there was a “huge need” for additional housing. Furthermore, the plans presented by Urban Splash include the establishment of new cycle and pedestrian pathways connecting Orrest Head Farm with Windermere Railway Station. The Windermere Gateway project is designed to address traffic congestion, facilitate the redevelopment of the town’s railway station, and construct affordable housing units. This initiative was conceived by a collaboration of The National Trust, Westmorland and Furness Council, and the Lake District National Park Authority. Conversely, those opposing the plan express concerns that it will lead to traffic disturbances, the destruction of natural habitats, and an unfavorable visual effect. Mark Kidd, who chairs the development committee, defended the approval, acknowledging that it would result in the loss of ecological areas and green space. He stated: “If there was a development to take place on that site, you would be turning green fields, on the edge of one of the Lakes’ major towns, into an urban space.” He added: “But it is allocated land as part of the local plan for residential use, and there’s always a huge need for extra housing, and they’ve got to go somewhere.” Updates from BBC Cumbria are available on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
