Abdul Nondo, a youth leader for Tanzania’s opposition, has been located after being left at a beach, less than a day after his reported abduction in Dar es Salaam, the country’s primary city. His political party, ACT Wazalendo, states that Nondo was severely beaten and injured and is currently hospitalized. Isihaka Mchinjita, the party’s deputy chairperson, reported that the politician was blindfolded and subjected to repeated assaults, alongside receiving death threats. Police have released a statement confirming the incident at Coco Beach late on Sunday night, indicating that they are investigating the matter. They stated that Nondo was abandoned at the beach by his abductors and subsequently sought assistance from a motorcycle taxi rider, who then transported him to the party offices. Police spokesman David Misime announced on Monday morning, “From there, party leaders rushed him to the hospital for treatment. We are investigating and we will take legal action.” Following a hospital visit to Nondo, Mchinjita provided an earlier update at 02:00 local time (23:00 GMT), stating that Nondo had been beaten “for a long time” before being left at the beach, where his abductors “removed his blindfold and handcuffs.” Mchinjita further conveyed, “Nondo said his abductors threatened him, warning him that if they capture him again, they would not spare his life.” The motive for his abduction remains unclear. On Sunday, ACT Wazalendo reported that Nondo was seized minutes after his arrival from the country’s western region, where he had been campaigning for the party’s candidates in the local elections held last week. He was reportedly taken from a bus station in Dar es Salaam during the early hours of Sunday by two individuals in a white four-wheel-drive vehicle. Police now state that investigations are being conducted to identify the suspects and ascertain their motive. This event occurs after the kidnapping and killing of a senior leader from the main opposition party in September. In that previous instance, Ali Mohamed Kibao of Chadema was removed from a bus, beaten, and then doused with acid. President Samia Suluhu Hassan condemned the incident and called for an investigation into the murder.
