Illyin Morrison, a 31-year-old birth trauma specialist midwife from Norwich, has been eliminated from the Great British Bake Off during the quarter-finals. Her departure followed a “toppled” cake in week eight, which featured 1970s-themed bakes, preventing her from achieving her personal goal to “prove something” to herself. Morrison was notable for being the first contestant in the current series to earn a coveted handshake from Paul Hollywood for her cinnamon cake in the opening episode, and she experienced a fainting episode in the subsequent week. Morrison stated, “I hope I haven’t disappointed any of you; I really did give it my all.” The Channel 4 program, now in its 15th series after originating on the BBC, features amateur bakers competing. The recent episode challenged participants to create a choux profiterole, followed by a gateau, and concluded with a cake intricately adorned with 1970s-era decorations. “It was very sad and no baker wants to go out with a toppled cake,” Ms Morrison commented. On her Instagram page, she expressed heartbreak over her collapsed gateau but acknowledged receiving significant support. She remarked, “Quarter finalist -a title I didn’t anticipate having and am so proud to have achieved.” She added, “You don’t get to this point of the competition without being at least an OK baker.” Prior to the competition, she told BBC Radio Norfolk, “Like most people I wanted to prove something to myself that I could do it and getting into that tent is an achievement in itself.” In a farewell letter posted on X, she described her participation in GBBO as a “massive” learning experience. She wrote, “I leave with memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life and a deeper understanding of myself and what I am capable of.” She further stated, “It has been a lesson in patience, determination and self-belief. “I am a firm-believer in ‘what’s for me, won’t miss me’ and this was for me, what a joy! I’m excited for what is next in this new chapter.”
