A local authority has issued a caution, urging the public to be vigilant regarding an individual described as a “scammer” who is offering fraudulent garden waste subscriptions in exchange for money. This alert follows reports of a person reportedly visiting residences, soliciting funds, and falsely claiming to be an officer from Colchester City Council. In the city located in Essex, residents have been required to pay for the fortnightly waste collections since last summer. Lib Dem councillor Martin Goss commented that it was a “terrible shame” that residents found themselves needing to be warned about a potential scam specifically targeting this service. He stated that the perpetrator was observed wearing a hi-vis jacket and utilizing fabricated garden waste subscription stickers as a method to deceive individuals. The council further clarified that residents can only legitimately subscribe to the service by visiting its official website or by contacting the customer service team.
