GWR has announced that the reopening of the Newquay to Par rail line in Cornwall has been postponed due to unforeseen emergency repair work. The installation of new tracks, part of the Mid Cornwall Metro project, commenced on November 18 and was initially scheduled for completion within two weeks. However, engineers discovered that ballast had become displaced near St Blazey, necessitating repairs. Network Rail indicated that the line would remain closed for “at least another week,” while confirming that the planned engineering work is progressing on schedule. The new track is intended to enable trains to operate to the re-established second platform at Newquay station. The Mid Cornwall Metro scheme, which is projected to be finished in 2026, aims to create a direct railway connection between Newquay and Falmouth. Network Rail stated: “Engineers working on the line discovered that a significant amount of ballast – the stones which hold the tracks in place – near St Blazey had become displaced and as a result repairs must be carried out before trains can run again.” The line is currently closed as engineers lay new track into Newquay station as part of the Mid Cornwall Metro project and was expected to reopen on Sunday, December 1. Network Rail clarified, “The issue with the ballast is not related to this planned engineering work, which is running on schedule.” During the ongoing engineering work, rail replacement services are in operation. Simon Gillibrand, Head of the Metro railway operations, offered an apology for the disruption. He commented, “We will do all we can to reopen the line as soon as possible. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we carry out these vital repairs.” Bogdan Lupu, Network Rail industry programme director, characterized the current installation as “the first of two major pieces of work” required to complete the Newquay branch line. Mr. Lupu remarked, “We’re sorry for the disruption but working this way is the fastest route to bring the benefits of Mid Cornwall Metro to passengers.” The scheme is funded by the government and Cornwall Council and is being implemented by Network Rail in collaboration with the council and GWR. The line is scheduled for another closure next spring for additional track works near Roche. This work is expected to impact train services for one month, between February 24 and March 23.
