An extensive £250 million initiative to establish an entirely new community beneath a town’s prominent railway viaduct has progressed. Proposals have been lodged for the construction of 1,300 residences on parcels of land situated on both sides of King Street West in Stockport, forming part of a collaborative undertaking between the developer ECF and the local council. This development is designed to incorporate a street exclusively for pedestrians, traversing its central area, alongside ground-level commercial units and a series of landscaped green courtyards. Joe Stockton, representing ECF, commented that these plans, should they receive approval, would constitute “one of the largest town centre regeneration projects in the UK”. The initiative, officially named Stockport 8, additionally intends to reinstate historical street layouts and designations through its architectural scheme, positioned adjacent to the town’s Grade-II listed viaduct. Proponents of the plan indicated that it aligns with broader objectives for 4,000 new homes throughout Stockport and follows several months of public consultation. Eamonn Boylan, who serves as interim chair for the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, stated that the proposal represented “not just a step, but a leap forward” in achieving this objective. Mr. Stockton elaborated that the project aims to deliver homes “for people at every stage of life and green open spaces for people to enjoy”, establishing a “benchmark for town centre living”. The submitted plans are scheduled for review by the council’s planning committee at a later date.
