England Captain Harry Kane, who has earned 101 caps for his country, has voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the significant number of players who have pulled out of the current England squad, stating his belief that “England comes before club”. A total of nine players have withdrawn from the squad designated for Lee Carsley’s concluding two fixtures as interim manager, ahead of Thomas Tuchel assuming the role in January. Speaking to ITV Sport, Kane reiterated his stance, saying, “I think England comes before anything. England comes before club.” He further elaborated, stating, “England is the most important thing you play as a professional footballer and Gareth [Southgate] was hot on that and he wasn’t afraid to make decisions if, you know, that started to drift from certain players.” When questioned whether the commitment to represent England had diminished during this international break, Kane responded, “Yeah, it’s a shame this week obviously.” He added, “I think it’s a tough period of the season, maybe that’s been taken advantage of a little bit.” Kane concluded his remarks on the matter by stating, “I don’t really like it if I’m totally honest. I think England comes before anything, any club situation.” The players who have withdrawn include Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Aaron Ramsdale, and Levi Colwill. Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton was initially called up as a replacement player, but subsequently became the ninth individual to withdraw from the squad. Jarell Quansah from Liverpool is expected to replace Branthwaite, having already participated in training with the team for the preceding two days. Interim manager Carsley commented on the situation, stating, “It’s important we make the most of the situation. With the amount of players that have pulled out, it gives an opportunity for the players that are here.” He further noted, “With the amount of pull-outs we’ve had in this window, historically it’s been like that in the past. November has always been a challenging window.” England’s promotion to League A of the Uefa Nations League will likely depend on securing victories against Greece in Athens on Thursday and the Republic of Ireland at Wembley on Sunday. Carsley stated that no member of the current squad has approached him regarding the concerns voiced by Kane. He also rejected the notion of an emerging club-versus-country conflict, choosing instead to focus on the players presently available to him. “I think it’s his [Harry Kane’s] opinion. I can only deal with what’s in front of us,” Carsley further remarked. He also mentioned, “I know the under-21s and under-20s have had a lot of pull-outs as well. It is definitely that time of the season with fatigue and little issues.” Carsley concluded by asserting, “The players here are massively proud of being here and are highly motivated for tomorrow.” Anthony Gordon, a winger for Newcastle, who attended the pre-match press conference alongside Carsley, managed to overcome a personal knock to join the England squad. When questioned about whether he needed to inform his club of his desire to join the international team, Gordon replied, “I didn’t really have to say. They know how I feel about playing for England and my wishes anyway. It was more about coming here and getting assessed to see if I was fit to play and I was.” Gordon subsequently informed BBC 5 Live that Kane was “well within his rights” to address the subject as the team’s captain. Gordon further stated, “He is talking about a broader point of wanting to play for England and everyone should want to play for England at all costs, which I totally agree with.” He acknowledged the withdrawals but offered context: “A lot of lads have pulled out but there is context to that. We are in November now going into December, we have played a lot of games in the Premier League. It’s so physical now there is no rest physically or mentally.” Gordon continued, “Some of those lads are playing in the Champions League as well, which makes it worse. So I am very understanding of what they are going through. I have had a couple of injuries myself, but luckily mine are not too bad, but obviously theirs are where they can’t play so I wish them well.” Full-back Alexander-Arnold was compelled to leave the field during the first half of Liverpool’s 2-0 victory against Aston Villa on Saturday. Midfielder Rice had been a fitness concern leading into Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday due to a knock, and was substituted in the 71st minute. He is also currently playing with a broken toe. Saka was similarly a doubt, yet the winger commenced the match for Arsenal before departing the field with a limp late in the game. He had previously sustained an injury while playing for England during the last international break, which led him to miss two Arsenal fixtures. Chelsea’s Palmer completed the entire match, notwithstanding initial doubts about his fitness prior to kick-off. Goalkeeper Ramsdale reportedly suffered a fractured finger during Southampton’s 2-0 loss to Wolves on Saturday. Forward Grealish was included in England’s squad despite not having played in any of Manchester City’s preceding seven matches. Manager Guardiola expressed his displeasure with England’s selection of Grealish, stating that he had inquired with Grealish about the situation, and the player had indicated his desire to report for international duty. Guardiola further commented, “Jack has had two or three setbacks in terms of injuries.” Branthwaite had been managing a minor knock sustained during Everton’s game against West Ham and has since returned to his club. The reasons behind the withdrawals of Chelsea defender Colwill and Manchester City midfielder Foden are currently undisclosed, despite both players completing 90 minutes in their respective matches over the weekend.
