Swansea City coach Luke Williams stated that the decision now rests with defender Ben Cabango, following a presentation by club staff aimed at persuading him to agree to a new contract. Cabango has participated in every minute of Swansea’s Championship season to date. The current agreement for the Wales centre-back is set to conclude at the end of the ongoing season. Swansea acknowledges the inevitable interest from other clubs in the 24-year-old player but expresses hope that he will commit his future to the club, where he has accumulated 202 senior appearances after progressing through their academy system. The meeting with Cabango and his representatives included head coach Williams, chairman Andy Coleman, and captain Matt Grimes, alongside other club personnel such as Swansea’s kit men and chef, all of whom are club supporters. Williams commented, “We had a very good presentation and meeting with Ben Cabango. We gave everything that we could to that, so we need to see if it was enough.” He further explained, “Many people from the club side [were involved], from the kit men to the chef to the chairman and the captain.” Williams elaborated on the extensive attendance, stating, “So many people were in there because we feel like we need to show him exactly how we feel, rather than him think ‘OK they have left it until the last minute and maybe they don’t feel like there’s anyone else, so they are just offering me [a contract] now’.” He concluded this point by saying, “I think after this presentation, he can’t feel like that.” Cabango has distinguished himself as a key player for Swansea this season, participating in every minute of their Championship fixtures and forming a strong central defensive partnership with Harry Darling, whose contract is also set to expire next summer. Swansea has arranged a comparable meeting with Darling, aged 25, in an effort to convince him to agree to a new contract. Regarding Cabango’s situation, Williams indicated that Swansea needs to exercise patience, as the player has “plenty of things to consider.” The Cardiff-born athlete is officially prohibited from engaging in discussions with other clubs within the English football system while under contract with Swansea; however, he will be permitted to negotiate with overseas teams if his contract status remains unresolved by 1 January. Williams suggested that Cabango’s representatives are probably already cognizant of interest from other clubs, given the uncertainty surrounding his future at Swansea. “We have to understand from Ben’s point of view that in a period of time when not much is happening [with his contract], the agent’s job is to protect his client and try to give him the best options,” Williams stated. He added, “We have to appreciate that things were done quite late and potentially the wheels were in motion elsewhere.” Williams concluded, “Ultimately it comes down to what Ben wants to do and what he feels is best for him and his family.” Williams, whose team is scheduled to play Luton Town in the Championship on Saturday, confirmed that there is no specific deadline for Cabango to respond to Swansea’s proposal. He further remarked, “If he doesn’t speak to us and the [January] window closes, at least we know we have him until the summer.” “I think it’s fair of me to suggest that the ball is in his court and he is in charge,” Williams concluded.
