The individual facing charges related to the detonation of an Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) camera in south-east London was not present at the Old Bailey for his scheduled hearing. Kevin Rees, a 62-year-old resident of Sidcup, was apprehended by counter-terrorism police following an incident on 6 December 2023, where a low-sophistication improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, causing damage to the camera located on Willersley Avenue. Charges against Mr. Rees include causing an explosion with the potential to endanger lives or inflict substantial damage to property. While no individuals sustained injuries during the explosion in Sidcup, both vehicles and a residential dwelling incurred damage. Furthermore, Mr. Rees faces three additional charges of possessing a prohibited weapon on or before 18 December 2023, stemming from allegations that he “had in his possession a weapon designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing”. Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command conducted the investigation into this incident. Legal representatives deliberated on his case during a hearing at the Old Bailey on Friday; however, despite being scheduled to appear in court personally, Mr. Rees was not present. His next court appearance is scheduled for a plea hearing on 11 April, and a provisional trial date has been established for 5 January 2026, at Woolwich Crown Court. Bail was granted to him, subject to the condition that he refrain from participating in any Ulez-related protests.
