A couple known for providing Christmas dinners to families requiring assistance has reported that this year marks their most extensive effort to date. Hannah and Steven Haggerty, residents of Hutton, Essex, operate the Facebook group “Give a Christmas Essex,” through which they supply turkeys, vegetables, and accompanying items to individuals unable to purchase them. This marks the fifth consecutive year the couple has made these donations. Ms. Haggerty stated, “We have 17 families confirmed this year so far and a few more to come, I think… that’s over 50 people.” The couple initially resolved to provide complimentary Christmas meals following their relocation to Essex from London. “We felt that there was a lack of community stuff happening,” Ms. Haggerty commented. Drawing from experiences with friends who were reluctant to seek charitable assistance due to pride, the Haggertys recognized the critical role of anonymity in reaching those requiring help. She further explained, “We offer a completely non-judgemental and confidential way of asking for help.” Over recent years, the couple has received assistance from benevolent residents who have contributed more ingredients than the Haggertys could supply independently, with at least one individual donating £200. Ms. Haggerty described this as “[It] is incredible.” She added, “[It] really feels like the community are coming together to help those who are sometimes missed in the day-to-day.” “Give a Christmas Essex” also accepts contributions of biscuits, chocolate, crackers, and toys.
