Two men facing allegations of operating a human smuggling enterprise from a car wash have rejected the accusations, asserting that they ran a “legitimate” business. Dilshad Shamo, 41, and Ali Khdir, 40, both from Caerphilly, are accused of transporting hundreds of individuals in cars, lorries, and boats to the UK from Iraq, Iran, and Syria, using their Caerphilly base. Tim Forte, representing Mr Shamo, stated that his client refutes any involvement in a conspiracy. Forte indicated that he would contend that certain evidence presented was “not material he recognises.” He further explained that numerous phone contacts in the Middle East, which were brought up in the evidence, belonged to Mr Shamo’s family members. Grahame James, counsel for Mr Khdir, noted that his client received permission to reside in the UK in 2009 and obtained British citizenship in 2011. James affirmed that the two defendants operated a “legitimate car wash” as partners in Caerphilly, and that Mr Khdir denies any participation in a conspiracy. He added that Mr Khdir suspects others may have accessed one of his mobile phones and also disclaimed any involvement in financial transactions. The prosecution has already presented its opening arguments to the jury, alleging that from September 2022 to April 2023, a human smuggling operation was orchestrated from the Fast Track Hand Car Wash in Caerphilly, a business owned and managed by the two men. The court was informed that the majority of individuals trafficked originated from Iraq, Iran, and Syria, and were charged sums “equating to several thousands of pounds”. Mr Shamo, an Iraqi native, and Mr Khdir, who is originally from Iran, both of whom previously provided Caerphilly addresses, are denying five charges of conspiracy to violate migration laws across Italy, Romania, Croatia, and Germany, with the aim of bringing individuals into European Union (EU) nations. The proceedings are anticipated to continue for a maximum of four weeks.
