A segment of a principal thoroughfare connecting the Isle of Man’s capital with its northern region will experience multiple closures to facilitate resurfacing and drainage operations. Specifically, a 1km (0.6 mile) portion of the A18 Mountain Road is scheduled for resurfacing and reprofiling, forming part of an initiative aimed at enhancing road safety. Between December 2 and 17, several daytime closures will be put in place along the section from Brandywell Road to the Creg Ny Baa junction to allow for road surveying. Subsequently, from March 31 to April 26, the road will be inaccessible 24 hours daily between the Bungalow and Creg Ny Baa, as excavation for drainage works and resurfacing takes place. The Department of Infrastructure stated that “the works came following a review of datasets such as road collision data.” The department made the decision to proceed with these works to enhance both the condition and safety of the thoroughfare. The DoI further noted that an accumulation of surface water near Kate’s Cottage contributes to an elevated risk of ice formation, attributed to some drainage systems not operating at full capacity. This specific road segment will be closed from 09:30 to 16:30 GMT on December 2-3, December 9-10, and December 16-17. Contingency dates for these closures are set for December 11 and 18. Since surveying activities rely on suitable weather conditions, the road will remain open if the weather prevents the completion of the work. Access to the Bungalow, Victory Cafe, Creg Ny Baa, Snaefell Mountain Railway, and Snaefell Summit Cafe will remain available during all closure periods. Furthermore, the programme includes supplementary road closures from April 14-17 and April 22-25, affecting the route from Ramsey to the Bungalow.
