The Essex Women’s cricket team recently convened with the Essex Rebels basketball squad, marking their initial joint meeting since a partnership was established earlier in the year. This county is set to accommodate one of the eight fully professional teams introduced as part of the restructured domestic women’s cricket framework. Furthermore, the cricket squad will utilize the University of Essex’s Colchester campus, which also serves as the base for the Rebels basketball and volleyball teams, for their training activities. Head coach Andy Tennant commented on the collaboration, stating, “It’s great to have a partnership with the University, and I think it gives us a bit of a competitive edge moving forward.” He added, “We’re really excited to be part of this partnership and speaking to the basketball and volleyball coaches – just chewing the fat, it’s been brilliant.” Tennant also highlighted the benefit of “Understanding what they do from a performance analysis point of view, especially with match-ups, is really useful.” Under the new domestic framework, the eight women’s teams are scheduled to compete alongside their male counterparts in both the T20 Blast and the One-Day Cup during the upcoming summer season. Essex is in the process of completing its squad roster, having already secured 12 players, and has also announced several coaching appointments, notably including Darren Stevens, a former all-rounder for Kent and Leicestershire. A majority of these players previously represented the Sunrisers regional team, which secured victory in the 50-over Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy earlier this summer. The Essex Rebels, who participate in the Women’s Basketball League and commenced their debut season in 2018-19, had Great Britain international Clare Paxton guide the cricketers on a tour of their facilities, which included a performance analysis suite. Her team-mates also shared insights from their seven years as a professional squad. Rebels manager Diana Voynova stated, “This collaboration marks an exciting step forward, and we look forward to building on this partnership in the months to come.”
