Public input is currently being gathered regarding the future provision of library services across Aberdeenshire, in light of proposed closure plans. Last month, the council expressed “regret” concerning its announcement method for the planned closures of 13 library buildings, following a community outcry over a perceived lack of consultation. The specific locations previously identified as potentially closing include Balmedie, Boddam, Cairnbulg, Cruden Bay, Insch, Inverbervie, Kintore, Macduff, New Pitsligo, Newmachar, Newtonhill, Rosehearty, and Strichen. Various alternatives are under investigation, such as delivering services within other existing local facilities, and a series of public community gatherings are scheduled. Live Life Aberdeenshire, the organization responsible for providing these services on behalf of the council, is inviting residents to share their perspectives. These engagement sessions are structured into two distinct phases; the initial events are scheduled for this month at the libraries in Cairnbulg, Kintore, Newmachar, Insch, Boddam, Rosehearty, and Macduff. Additional events are planned for January at the libraries situated in New Pitsligo, Inverbervie, Newtonhill, Strichen, Cruden Bay, and Balmedie. Avril Nicol, Head of communities, partnerships and wellbeing, commented: “Our aim through these discussions is to provide reassurance that our intention is to continue to provide an element of face-to-face contact with our communities in the future, albeit this might be in a different location or delivered in a different way.” Residents can also submit their feedback directly to Live Life Aberdeenshire via email at llacustomerservice@aberdeenshire.gov.uk.
