Model and actress Cara Delevingne has assumed the portrayal of Elton John in a recently released video for his track “Step Into Christmas.” This rendition of the 1973 song’s initial video features Delevingne wearing oversized spectacles and a vibrant waistcoat, creating a striking likeness to the renowned musician. Delevingne stated that embodying the 77-year-old artist was “a dream I didn’t know I had until it happened.” She further expressed, “I wish I could pretend to be Elton every day.” Over five decades after the original, the recreation released on Wednesday offers a behind-the-scenes look at producers working to establish an appropriately festive setting. The video commences with Delevingne, fully costumed with a wig, informing seemingly unimpressed producers that she intends to play Sir Elton. Alternating between almost identical shots from both videos, the model performs the iconic Christmas song while playing the piano, mimicking Sir Elton’s initial movements. Sir Elton mentioned encountering Delevingne at the Glastonbury music festival during the summer, where they had discussed their mutual desire to collaborate “if the right idea came up.” Sir Elton commented, “She’s hilarious to spend time with, we both have quite a self-deprecating sense of humour.” The pop star described the concept of Delevingne portraying him in the updated music video as “the perfect opportunity.” He added, “Thank God Cara thought the same, because it came out great.” Delevingne, aged 32, stated that Sir Elton had “always been an idol of mine.” She further remarked, “To say his music has had a deeply profound effect on me is an understatement.” Delevingne concluded, “I hope that Elton may one day return the favour and agree to play me in my not yet developed, written, pitched or funded biopic. Fingers crossed.” “Step Into Christmas” achieved position number 24 in the UK top 40 upon its release in November 1973, and topped the Billboard Christmas Singles chart in the US. The track currently holds the number 15 spot in the UK singles chart. Last month, Sir Elton disclosed that he has been unable to complete his latest album owing to vision problems. He informed ABC’s Good Morning America that he experienced vision loss in his right eye from an infection, and his left eye “is not the greatest.” The singer explained, “I can do something like this [interview] but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for start.” However, during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, Sir Elton affirmed his intention to continue making records and pursue a “musical future.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
