Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has described Mohamed Salah as “selfish” for publicly voicing his dissatisfaction regarding the club’s failure to present him with a new contract. Salah has secured seven trophies with Liverpool, including the Premier League and Champions League. Following Sunday’s victory against Southampton, Salah, whose existing agreement concludes at the season’s end, informed journalists that he is “probably more out than in” and has not yet received a new contract proposal. The 32-year-old forward is Liverpool’s leading scorer this season with 12 goals across all competitions, having netted twice against the Saints to extend the club’s lead at the top of the Premier League by eight points. “I must say I am very disappointed with Mo Salah,” Carragher stated on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football. He added, “Liverpool have Real Madrid midweek [in the Champions League] and Man City at the weekend. That’s the story right now.” Carragher further commented, “If he keeps putting comments out, his agent puts out cryptic messages, that is selfish. That is thinking about themselves and not the football club.” While Liverpool has not issued a public statement regarding Salah’s comments, a club source informed BBC Sport that discussions between Liverpool and Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, are continuing and have been constructive. Chris Sutton, a former striker for Blackburn and Chelsea, commented on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club that Salah’s choice to engage reporters in the mixed zone about his future indicates a desire to remain at Anfield. Sutton stated, “It wasn’t one of those where Mo Salah was asked to talk, he actually made an approach and wanted to speak to a couple of press guys to get things off his chest.” He concluded, “So in that respect it says to me that he wants to stay.” Rory Smith of The Athletic further remarked, “It strikes me that he is making it very clear to the Liverpool fans that he wants to stay and that if he doesn’t end up staying that it’s not really a lack of intent on his part.” Smith identified Salah’s age as a potential issue, noting that Liverpool would be considering extensive data from footballers over the past 20 to 30 years, which indicates a decline in performance during a player’s mid-30s. The club would be evaluating whether it is prudent to commit approximately £300,000 a week to a player who might only maintain this level for another year. Smith questioned, “Or maybe he will have another two years at this level? Or another five or six? That’s the gamble Liverpool have to take.” In addition to Salah, defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and club captain Virgil van Dijk also have contracts expiring at the close of the current season. Carragher reiterated, “The most important thing for Liverpool Football Club this season isn’t the future of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.” He emphasized, “The most important thing is Liverpool winning the Premier League.” “I hope they don’t feel like this club would fall apart if they left,” Carragher continued. “Steven Gerrard left the club and the next manager won the Premier League. Graeme Souness left and Liverpool won the Double. Salah, would we miss him? Of course we would. But Liverpool will move on.” Post navigation Bristol City Squad “Stretched” by Injuries Ahead of Norwich Match, Coach Manning Reports Cornish Pirates Secure Fourth Consecutive Victory, Coach Attributes Success to Team Focus
