A time capsule, described as a “snapshot of the 21st century,” has been embedded within the structure of a historic market hall located in the city centre. Derby City Council positioned a time capsule within Derby Market Hall, a venue that has been undergoing a £35 million renovation for the past three years. This new capsule is situated alongside two earlier ones, originating from 1864 and 1938, which were discovered during the renovation work on the Grade-II listed building. The site is scheduled to resume operations next spring. Nadine Peatfield, the leader of Derby City Council, commented: “This is an exciting moment in the Market Hall project as we seal a snapshot of 21st Century life for generations to come.” Cadent Gas supplied the capsule, which contains a varied collection of items donated by businesses throughout the city, intended to “reflect life in Derby in 2024”. Among its contents are a 3D printed submarine from Rolls-Royce, the most recent food and drinks guide from Marketing Derby, and a model Toyota Corolla. Additionally, a collection of photographs highlighting “Derby’s diverse communities and vibrant events” was included, featuring images from 2024’s Derby Pride, the 2023 Lantern Parade, and the Caribbean Carnival. Ms Peatfield further stated: “It’s a strange concept, not knowing when these items will be uncovered. I hope that whenever this capsule is opened, people will get a sense of what life was like in Derby in 2024 and see it as a vibrant, diverse and thriving city.” Tim Wates, chairman of the construction firm Wates, which is overseeing the refurbishment, remarked: “It was an honour to include a piece of Wates in the time capsule. Time will tell if the capsule is recovered, but it is a legacy we are proud to be involved in.”
