Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, expressed his satisfaction with his team’s display. “Really pleased. It was a good performance from the players. Every game brings a new challenge and Brentford were what we thought we would be – a strong team,” he stated. Howe highlighted the quality of the goals scored, specifically mentioning his pleasure at Sandro Tonali’s two goals. He added that there is “a really good feeling about the group at the moment” and that “We are building in confidence all the time.” Regarding Tonali’s form, Howe observed that the player is “starting to see the best of him.” He attributed this improvement to “the tweak in position,” which has made Tonali “a lot more comfortable when he is deeper on the pitch.” Howe affirmed that Tonali “is showing all the qualities that we knew when we signed him,” and that the focus is on “finding the right balance for him and the team.” Howe underscored the significance of the midfield, stating, “The midfield wins and loses you games, it goes without saying that it is such an important area of the pitch.” He expressed satisfaction with the performances of Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Joe Willock in the match. He further commented on the team’s overall equilibrium, stating, “The balance of the team is good. We have players playing in their chosen positions and playing well. We look creative again and a high number of shots and chances to score.” Despite the positive outcome, Howe conveyed disappointment regarding “the bookings and to lose two key players in Bruno and Schar [for the semi-final],” though he acknowledged that “it goes with the territory.” He concluded this point by stating, “We are competitive and encourage the intensity so you can’t have everything.”
