A community shop located in north Cornwall is appealing for additional volunteers as it begins its second decade of operation. Marhamchurch Village Shop, situated near Bude, is set to commemorate its tenth anniversary this Thursday. The establishment, which is entirely run by volunteers, first opened in 2014 within the village hall, following the closure of the local Post Office five years prior. It subsequently relocated to a purpose-built premises in 2019. Chris Edwards, who chairs the shop’s management committee, stated: “The shop only survives because of its volunteers, so we’re always looking for new people able to help out and this seemed the perfect time to encourage new recruits.” Mrs. Edwards further explained that most volunteers dedicate two to three hours weekly, with others contributing specialized skills such as bookkeeping. Initially supported by grants and various fundraising initiatives, the shop has since become financially independent. A spokesperson noted that it has “even been able to make donations to village needs such as the Methodist Church Hall and the play park.” It was announced that current, former, and prospective volunteers were invited to commemorate the anniversary by raising a glass at the shop’s annual Christmas gathering, scheduled for Friday at 19:00 GMT.
