England cricketer Alice Capsey, who has participated in 17 one-day internationals and 37 T20 matches for her country, is expected to be a notable omission from the squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa, following England’s elimination in the group stage of the T20 World Cup. The squad announcement is scheduled for next week. The 20-year-old Capsey will not join the team for the T20 and Test portions of the multi-format series, which is set to take place in November and December. According to reports from the Telegraph, the all-rounder will retain her position in the one-day international squad. Batter Paige Scholfield, aged 28, is anticipated to be selected, having made her debut for England in Ireland during September. Capsey, considered one of the most promising young talents in English cricket, failed to score more than 20 runs in any of her three innings during the T20 World Cup last month. England’s team did not advance to the semi-finals, concluding their group stage in third place following a significant loss to West Indies. Given that formidable Australia was knocked out in the semi-finals by South Africa, and underdog New Zealand ultimately secured the trophy, England squandered a prime chance to break a trophy drought that has persisted since 2017. Following England’s elimination, former spinner Alex Hartley stated that the team “were let down by their fitness,” a critique that head coach Jon Lewis dismissed. The tour of South Africa, commencing on 24 November, will see England compete in three T20s, three ODIs, and a four-day Test match. This Test marks England’s first away match against South Africa since 1961 and their first overseas Test against any nation other than Australia or India since their visit to New Zealand in 1992. The official squad announcement, initially scheduled for Friday, has been postponed until next week. On Thursday, Capsey achieved five wickets but was dismissed for a golden duck during her Melbourne Renegades’ defeat by Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash. Furthermore, she was among the athletes retained by Delhi Capitals for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India. Scholfield, who was born in South Africa and is a team-mate of Capsey’s at Oval Invincibles in The Hundred, participated in all five fixtures when a significantly altered England squad toured Ireland in preparation for the T20 World Cup. During that tour, she scored 59 runs across three one-day internationals and an additional 36 runs in two T20 matches. Additionally, England is expected to unveil an updated list of central contracts, which will feature an increase in remuneration.
