Despite John Fury’s regular presence at most of his son Tyson Fury’s fights in the UK and Saudi Arabia, Tyson Fury’s head coach SugarHill Steward has indicated that John Fury will not be part of his son’s corner for the upcoming rematch against Oleksandr Usyk this Saturday in Riyadh. The 36-year-old Fury aims to avenge his narrow points defeat to Usyk, the WBO, WBA (Super), and IBF heavyweight world champion, which occurred last May. John Fury was present in the corner during that initial bout, alongside trainers Steward and Andy Lee, and the designated cutman. During the open workouts held on Wednesday, Steward seemed to confirm John’s absence from the corner for the upcoming fight. Steward stated, “Just myself [will be in the corner], Andy Lee and the cutman. Pretty much that’s it.” These remarks are expected to surprise many, even though there have been previous calls for Fury to implement changes. The chaotic organization of Fury’s corner during his first fight with Usyk drew criticism, particularly as his father John and both coaches reportedly issued instructions simultaneously. Fury, who experienced his inaugural professional defeat in 36 fights against Usyk, had previously expressed uncertainty this week regarding his father’s presence in his corner. When questioned about his father’s involvement, Tyson responded, “I don’t know. I don’t get involved in all that.” Assistant coach Andy Lee also indicated he was unaware of John’s potential involvement, contrasting with promoter Frank Warren’s statement to BBC Sport earlier this month that he anticipated Fury Sr’s return to the corner. Usyk achieved the status of the first undisputed heavyweight champion in nearly 25 years six months prior; however, the Ukrainian has since relinquished the IBF title specifically for this rematch. Prior to the previous Usyk v Fury contest, John Fury reportedly headbutted a member of Usyk’s team on the Monday preceding the fight, though he has not been observed in Riyadh this week.
