Manager Tiernan Lynch extended a welcome to Shane Ferguson, as Derry City, the League of Ireland Premier Division club, officially announced on Wednesday morning the signing of the Northern Ireland international. The 33-year-old player has committed to a one-year contract with the Candystripes, which includes a provision for an additional year. Ferguson, who previously played for Newcastle United, has earned 57 caps for Northern Ireland, with his most recent international match being their 2-0 victory against San Marino in May 2023. Hailing from Derry, Ferguson is capable of playing in both the left-back and left-wing positions. He spent his most recent seasons with Rotherham United, departing the club in the summer at the conclusion of his contract, following their relegation to League One. The ex-Millwall player has netted two goals in international competitions, having also represented Northern Ireland at the Under-21, U19, and U17 age groups. Injuries impacted his last season at Rotherham. “I’m delighted to be coming home and once I had spoken with Tiernan and heard his plans for the club, it was a simple decision,” Ferguson stated on the Derry City FC website. He added, “I’ve been training hard after a frustrating last season and I’m feeling very strong. I will really benefit now from a full pre-season and be ready to go when the new campaign starts.” Ferguson also remarked, “Derry City is obviously a club I know a bit about and I’m well aware of how passionate that support base is. I’m really looking forward to doing my bit to hopefully bring success to the Brandywell.”
