Tottenham Hotspur’s goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, who has made 55 appearances for the club, underwent surgery following a match on Saturday where he played for 60 minutes against Manchester City with a broken ankle. The 28-year-old player required medical attention during the first half after a collision involving City winger Savinho. Despite this, he continued to play the entire match, which Tottenham won by a score of 4-0. Vicario shared his thoughts on social media, stating, “Sometimes football gives you its highs, and sometimes it challenges you in ways you don’t expect.” He added, “I played 60 minutes at the Etihad with a broken bone in my ankle, giving absolutely everything I had for the team. Unfortunately there was no way around this one. I needed surgery.” He further expressed, “I’m disappointed I won’t be able to help the team for a while.” Tottenham has not provided a specific timeline for Vicario’s return, indicating that the club’s medical staff will evaluate him to ascertain when he can recommence training. The Italian goalkeeper has been absent for only four games since his transfer from Empoli in June 2023, none of which were Premier League fixtures. Fraser Forster, aged 36, has filled in for Vicario in all four instances, which included a Carabao Cup victory at Coventry in September and Europa League matches against AZ Alkmaar and Galatasaray. Following Saturday’s triumph over champions City at Etihad Stadium, Ange Postecoglou’s team currently holds the sixth position in the Premier League standings. In the Europa League, they are positioned seventh, having secured three wins and one defeat from their initial four matches. Tottenham faces the loss of Vicario to ankle surgery just 48 hours after achieving a 4-0 victory at Manchester City. This season, supporters in north London have experienced fluctuating results, moving from significant victories to disappointing defeats. However, what is considered Postecoglou’s most notable away win against the champions is now succeeded by the absence of a key player. While Tottenham possesses other talented players and generally has competent backups in most positions, the goalkeeper role has become a subject of examination. Concerns have been raised regarding Forster’s current Premier League capability, particularly following an injury-affected season last year where he made only one appearance, and after some uncertain performances against Coventry City and Galatasaray this current campaign. The club’s decision not to acquire a top-tier backup goalkeeper could potentially impact Tottenham during a critical month that may shape their season’s outcome.
