A new zig-zag pedestrian route, connecting North Shields town centre with the Fish Quay, is now accessible to the public. North Tyneside Council (NTC) stated that this pathway, which provides step-free access down a steep embankment, aims to enhance ease for individuals visiting the quayside’s hospitality establishments. Construction on the initiative commenced in 2022, but its finalization was postponed, attributed by the council to “several challenging areas underground.” Despite these challenges, NTC characterized the completed project as “fantastic” and extended gratitude to local residents and businesses for their patience throughout the building phase. The construction involved the erection of multiple sheet pile retaining walls and reinforced earth slopes. During the period of works, some local residents voiced complaints regarding the noise and disruption caused. Financial backing for this regeneration scheme was supplied by the North East Combined Authority, utilizing funds from the region’s Transforming Cities Fund. Councillor Carl Johnson, North Tyneside’s deputy mayor, holds the cabinet portfolio for regeneration, culture, and economic development. He stated: “For a long time people have been telling us they wanted better pedestrian links between the town centre and the Fish Quay.”The walkway has been a hugely complex project and it has presented different challenges along the way.”We know it has caused noise and disruption for residents and businesses nearby, and we sincerely apologise for that.”The end result is fantastic, and I’m delighted to see it finished in time for Christmas 2024 and the North Shields 800 celebrations in 2025.”
