John Eustace, manager of Blackburn Rovers, who secured the club’s Championship status last season and has guided them to a notable 10 victories in 19 league matches this term, views the upcoming January transfer window as a chance to demonstrate Blackburn’s ultimate capability for promotion to the Premier League. Eustace’s team secured a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Tuesday, marking their fifth successive win in the Championship. This result propelled them to fifth position in the league standings, with a match in hand compared to their rivals, positioning them within contention for promotion just before the season’s midpoint. Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, Eustace stated, “It’s important we improve and invest in the right areas. It’s evident where we need to do that.” He continued, “If we’re in a strong position come January then why not? The league is wide open and we’ve got to keep building and believing in what we’re doing.” He clarified his stance, adding, “I’m not saying about being promoted but I’m saying about building and bringing good quality into the group.” Eustace emphasized the need for ambition, saying, “It’s important that we want success and that isn’t given, you have to earn it. It might not be this season but we’re certainly headed in the right direction so it’s important we keep building with quality.” Blackburn’s current performance stands in sharp contrast to the previous season, during which the club experienced difficulties in the Championship. Eustace took over from Jon Dahl Tomasson after a sequence of eight Championship matches without a win. The ex-Birmingham City manager subsequently ensured the club remained in the division, guiding them to a 19th-place finish, three points above the relegation places. Several astute acquisitions made during the summer, notably former Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell and forwards Yuki Ohashi and Makhtar Gueye, have revitalized their prospects this season. These additions have positioned them as contenders for a return to the top flight, a feat not achieved since their relegation in 2012. Eustace further commented, “I know this group is committed and will run through a brick wall for each other. That was proven last season.” He elaborated on the team’s evolution, stating, “The way we did that and the way we’ve added to the group now, we’ve added more characters and good honest people.” He concluded by highlighting the team’s self-belief and performance: “The group are believing in ourselves more from the football. We’re a really good footballing team. The goals have proven that since the start of the season.”
