Fly-half Sam Prendergast led Leinster to a win against Bristol Bears, contributing 20 points at Ashton Gate. Bristol Bears (7) 12 Tries: Lahiff, Ibitoye Con: Janse van Rensburg Leinster (7) 35 Tries: Larmour, Prendergast 2, Barrett, Van der Flier Con: Prendergast 5 Leinster commenced their campaign for a fifth Investec Champions Cup title by delivering a dominant second-half performance, securing a bonus-point win over Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate. Fly-half Sam Prendergast accumulated 20 points, which included two of his team’s four tries scored in the second half. New recruit Jordie Barrett and Josh van der Flier also registered tries. Bristol initiated the match strongly, taking the lead courtesy of Max Lahiff from close range. However, Leinster, despite having two players temporarily suspended, responded swiftly as Jordan Larmour exploited a handling mistake by Rich Lane. The score was level at halftime, but the visiting Leinster side introduced New Zealand utility back Barrett and South Africa’s World Cup-winning lock RG Snyman. Their presence proved pivotal, shifting momentum towards Leinster. Barrett scored his first points for the club with a deceptive dummy before touching down under the posts, and Snyman’s powerful run created an opportunity for Prendergast, securing the bonus point. Back row player Van der Flier further extended the lead for the four-time champions with a strong drive following a line-out. Bristol managed a late consolation try when winger Gabriel Ibitoye collected Kieran Marmion’s kick and ran in to score. Leinster are scheduled to host Clermont Auvergne in their subsequent Pool 2 match on Saturday at 17:30 GMT. Meanwhile, Bristol will journey to face former champions La Rochelle later that day at 20:00. Prendergast’s exceptional display reinforced his credentials as a potential long-term replacement for Johnny Sexton for both Leinster and Ireland. The initial half was characterized by a tactical battle, with Bristol attempting to deny Leinster possession. However, Prendergast’s astute chip kick over the defense created disarray among the Bears, and Lane’s failure to secure the ball led to it bouncing favorably for Larmour to score. Following the interval, Leinster intensified their pressure, with Prendergast executing a superb combination with debutant Barrett. The renowned All Black, entering the game at full-back, received the ball at first receiver before releasing the fly-half to execute a wrap-around move and score. Shortly thereafter, Leinster employed a similar attacking structure, but on this occasion, Barrett retained possession and scored, with Prendergast acting as a decoy runner. The number 10 subsequently increased his try count, supporting Snyman’s powerful surge to break free and score his team’s fourth try. Prendergast’s flawless kicking, converting all five attempts from the tee, capped off an outstanding individual performance as he aims to solidify his position as a key player for both his club and national team. American rugby star Ilona Maher, who recently signed with Bristol Bears Women, was presented to the home supporters during the halftime interval. The Premiership team’s prospects were hampered by an early injury to their influential fly-half AJ MacGinty, and their play was further affected when England prop Ellis Genge departed the field shortly after halftime. Bristol boss Pat Lam stated, “It was a huge disruption losing AJ. It had an effect on our game and being able to play our shapes, but the boys competed and kept coming at them.” He continued, “They showed their strength, there were a couple of tries through the middle, but I can’t fault the boys for hanging in there.” Lam reported that Genge experienced calf muscle cramp but is expected to be fit for the journey to La Rochelle. The Bristol lineup was: Lane; Bates, Van Rensburg, Ravouvou, Ibitoye; MacGinty, Randall; Genge, Thacker, Lahiff, Dun, Owen, Grondona, Harding (capt), Mata. Replacements included: Oghre, Woolmore, Chawatama, Luatua, Grondona, Marmion, Jenkins, Elizalde.
