Tiernan Lynch concluded his managerial period at Larne successfully on Tuesday night, as the Irish Premiership champions defeated Institute 2-0, securing their advancement to the quarter-finals of the current BetMcLean Cup season. News emerged on Monday confirming Lynch’s impending move to manage Derry City, a League of Ireland Premier Division club. However, he was scheduled to lead the Invermen for a final match against Stute, marking the end of his more than seven-year leadership of the east Antrim club. The cup fixture took place at the Brandywell, which serves as the home ground for Lynch’s new team. This venue was used subsequent to his choice to depart from a very successful period managing Larne. Following a first half without goals, Paul O’Neill, entering as a substitute, initiated the scoring in the 58th minute with a chipped shot over Gareth Muldoon. Sean Graham extended the visiting team’s lead in the 70th minute after maneuvering past several defenders and executing an impressive left-footed curl into the goal. Larne is scheduled to play Annagh United in an away match during the quarter-finals of the tournament on December 4. Prior to the match’s commencement, attention was focused on the departing manager, Lynch. However, Institute began the game with strong momentum, as Stephen Doherty nearly scored early on, curving a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area just wide of the post, and then had another close attempt shortly after. Doherty was once more central to the action when his inswinging corner kick was headed by striker Padraig Lynch, from six yards directly in front of the goal, onto the Larne crossbar. Evan Tweed also threatened with a long-range shot. Meanwhile, at the opposite end, goalkeeper Gareth Muldoon demonstrated good agility, diving low to his right to secure a low shot from Conor McKendry around the midpoint of the half. The stalemate was eventually resolved 13 minutes into the second half, courtesy of O’Neill, who had been introduced at half-time. He sprinted onto a well-placed through ball from Conor McKendry, then coolly chipped it over the advancing ‘Stute goalkeeper. The visiting side then extended their advantage with an impressive solo effort from Graham. The winger skillfully navigated past several defenders while moving in from the right flank, and then, with composure, curled the ball into the net’s bottom corner, eluding Muldoon’s desperate dive. Concurrently, Paddy McLaughlin’s inaugural match as Glenavon manager resulted in a disappointing outcome, as the Lurgan Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat against Dungannon Swifts in the Mid Ulster Cup semi-finals, held at Stangmore Park on Tuesday night. Dean Curry scored with a powerful header in the 33rd minute, giving the Swifts the lead. However, James Doona equalized in the 56th minute with an excellent solo play, cutting inside and shooting into the goal. Andrew Mitchell secured the winning goal with seven minutes remaining.
