Police Operation Targets Keyless Car Thefts, Leads to Ten Arrests

Authorities have apprehended ten individuals and dismantled a suspected chop shop, as law enforcement agencies stated their efforts to combat vehicle thefts, which have seen a rise in incidents involving keyless cars. On Tuesday, six individuals, whose ages range from 18 to 29, were taken into custody following raids conducted across the areas of Dudley, Wolverhampton, and Sandwell. West Midlands Police reported that an additional man was apprehended on suspicion of obstructing an officer. Furthermore, on Monday, officers traced a black Land Rover, believed to be stolen, to the aforementioned alleged chop shop, situated on an industrial estate adjacent to Watery Lane in Willenhall. A vehicle departing from that location was intercepted, and its three occupants, aged 20, 25, and 37, were arrested on suspicion of motor vehicle theft. The 37-year-old individual also faced arrest on suspicion of possessing Class B drugs, while the 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. Inspector Gavin Peever stated that law enforcement has observed a rise in keyless vehicle thefts throughout Dudley, Sandwell, and Wolverhampton. He further commented, “However, we are running a targeted operation to identify suspects, gather intelligence and bring offenders to justice.” Keyless automobile systems operate by requiring a fob for the vehicle to detect and unlock, as opposed to a physical key for manual unlocking. Perpetrators employ a method known as relay theft, which involves utilizing a device to detect and amplify the signal from a car’s fob. This particular technique eliminates the need for thieves to physically steal a key or forcibly enter a property.
