Authorities have apprehended five individuals following an incident in Paignton, Devon, where a man was attacked with what law enforcement officials characterized as a “chemical substance.” Devon and Cornwall Police reported that officers responded to Victoria Street on 21 November, approximately 01:10 GMT, after receiving reports that two men had approached another individual and thrown a substance at him. A man in his 30s suffered potentially life-changing injuries and is currently receiving hospital treatment, where his condition remains critical, police confirmed. Among those taken into custody, a 46-year-old man from Paignton was arrested on suspicion of applying a corrosive fluid with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Additionally, a man and a woman, both 44 years old and from Paignton, were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to cause grievous bodily harm with intent. A 43-year-old woman, also from Paignton, faced arrest on suspicion of wounding with intent, while a 22-year-old man from Paignton was arrested on suspicion causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Police stated that all five individuals have since been released on police bail as further inquiries are conducted. The force also indicated that there would be an increased police presence in the vicinity.
