Opposition has emerged against a proposed McDonald’s establishment in a Birmingham suburb. The plans, which are for a new fast-food outlet, have not yet been formally submitted but detail a restaurant and drive-through facility on a plot of land adjacent to Hazelwell Lane in Stirchley. A petition opposing the development has garnered over 1,300 signatures. Some local residents have voiced concerns that the project could negatively impact independent businesses and exacerbate traffic and environmental issues within the locality. McDonald’s has stated its commitment to engaging with the local community’s perspectives and is receptive to feedback. An online consultation regarding the plans is currently active and will conclude on 26 November. On Tuesday afternoon, a group of residents convened on Pershore Road, directly across from the intended site, to protest the proposals. Shirley Harris, a lifelong resident of Stirchley, remarked that the area has transformed from what she described as a “vibrant little village” abundant with independent shops. She expressed her disapproval “of any place which would be a drive-in, drive-out food place,” further noting that “the traffic is so congested already.” Alice Jones, another individual participating in the protest, cited “health reasons” and the “effects of obesity on our community” as her primary objections to McDonald’s establishing a presence in the area. In contrast, McDonald’s has stated that the proposed branch would provide approximately 100 new employment opportunities for local residents and contribute an estimated £45,000 annually in business rates to Birmingham City Council. Resident Keith Mowbray expressed his view that a new McDonald’s was a “great idea,” believing it to be necessary for the local area. He commented, “They’re reliable, the food’s good, and let’s be honest, we all love them.” Mowbray further added, “An investment like McDonald’s, which is a lot of money, employs a lot of people, is good for the area.”
