Newcastle has depended significantly on Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak for scoring goals in recent seasons, with Isak typically featuring in the Premier League and Wilson in cup competitions. However, the team’s difficulties in progressing this season are attributed to the absence of Sven Botman, which has notably affected the defensive line. Before Botman’s injury last season, the club maintained a robust defense and a stable back five, including goalkeeper Nick Pope. Currently, Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are still out of play. Combined with past events involving Kieran Trippier a few months prior, the team’s defensive unit appears somewhat fragmented. The defense has served as the club’s cornerstone in recent years, a strategy implemented by manager Eddie Howe. A stable defensive line provides a strong basis for team development, and Howe had established this early on, resulting in a low number of goals conceded. Nevertheless, these defensive foundations have somewhat eroded. Furthermore, the club did not acquire any new players to refresh the squad during the summer, resulting in insufficient squad depth to support the team when it is weakened by injuries.
