A police officer has been dismissed from service after operating his vehicle without a current MOT certificate and misleading an inspector regarding the matter. PC Benjamin Warmington, based in Alnwick, Northumberland, was found to have unlawfully driven his Ford minibus on 51 occasions. This came to light following an anonymous letter sent to Northumbria Police. A misconduct hearing additionally determined that he had been untruthful to his police inspector, asserting that he only used the vehicle for repairs. The panel concluded he was guilty of gross misconduct, resulting in his immediate dismissal and placement on the College of Policing Barred List. Mr Warmington, who joined the force in 2001, received a commendation in 2009 for saving a woman’s life. He stated that his MOT expired in August 2022, but he was unaware of its lapse until he discovered a note on his minibus the subsequent January. The officer indicated that he promptly scheduled the test but continued to drive until an anonymous letter was dispatched to his inspector. Mr Warmington attributed his actions to emotional stress, stating he “didn’t use any space in my head because there wasn’t any.” The panel chair, Nick Hawkins, commented that had the PC offered “full admissions” and not misled his inspector, the “matter may well have taken a different course.” However, Mr Hawkins further asserted: “The public expect police officers to have the highest standards of honesty and integrity, and you have not displayed these.” The panel determined that the sole disciplinary action it could impose to “protect the public’s confidence in policing” was dismissal without notice. Detective Superintendent Donna Rose, Northumbria Police’s head of professional standards, remarked that the “overwhelming majority” of officers “make a positive difference to people’s lives.” She added: “We are determined to ensure their efforts are not overshadowed by the actions of those who do not share these same values.”
