Assailants in Mexico have fatally shot a judge outside a courthouse in the city of Acapulco. Judge Edmundo Román Pinzón sustained at least four bullet wounds as he was exiting the courthouse car park on Wednesday afternoon, local time. He was a senior judge who had previously served as president of the highest court in the state of Guerrero, where Acapulco is situated. This killing occurs amidst an increase in deadly attacks targeting officials within the conflict-ridden southern state. Law enforcement officials have interviewed witnesses and collected CCTV footage from the crime scene; however, no arrests have yet been made in relation to the incident. Additionally, security forces have intensified their operations in the resort town with the aim of apprehending the perpetrators. As reported by the local newspaper El Sol de Acapulco, the judge presided over the court responsible for cases involving murders, kidnappings, and car thefts. The potential motive for the killing remains undetermined. The governor of Guerrero state declared that the crime necessitated “immediate justice”. This judicial slaying represents the most recent in a series of highly violent assaults that have occurred in Guerrero in recent weeks. In the preceding month, the remains of 11 individuals, among them two children, were discovered within a vehicle in Chilpancingo, a town situated 100km (62 miles) north of Acapulco. Acapulco, formerly a renowned beach resort, has also experienced significant violence, as competing gangs vie for dominance over the city’s illicit drug trade, occasionally resulting in mutilated bodies being left on its beaches.
