The High Court has issued an interim injunction to Enfield Council, leading to a temporary prohibition of unauthorized car meets throughout Enfield. Previously, the council had stated that groups intending to “show off their cars” were congregating unlawfully close to the A10. According to the council, this injunction will empower both the police and the council with additional authority to address dangerous driving and antisocial behavior at these events within the borough, including the power to make arrests. The council announced on Wednesday that the injunction had been granted, and it is expected to become effective within the coming days, pending finalization by the court. On its official website, the council released a statement indicating that over the last two years, the frequency and scale of illegal events have expanded, a trend it contended heightened the risk of accidents and instances of antisocial behavior. The council further noted that the application for the interim injunction succeeded due to “compelling evidence provided by the council, police, businesses, and residents.” The Metropolitan Police reported that in 2023, officers confiscated a minimum of 60 vehicles, issued over 300 warnings to motorists, and distributed more than 200 summonses for infractions like exhaust modifications on the A10 in Enfield. Additionally, in 2021, the council had previously implemented a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) across various areas within and surrounding Enfield, which effectively prohibited “vehicle cruising.” Ergin Erbil, who serves as the leader of Enfield Council, characterized the injunction as a significant measure. He further stated: “We will continue our ongoing dialogue with Transport for London, to investigate long term solutions as part of our determination to resolve this important issue and to improve community safety and keep our residents safe.” Residents have been encouraged by the council to report such car meets to the police without delay, either by dialing 101 while an event is in progress or by submitting an online report.
