Saturday’s Championship football matches, specifically Plymouth’s fixture against Oxford and Cardiff City’s game versus Watford, have been postponed. This decision follows the issuance of severe weather warnings for south west England and Wales. Plymouth had indicated that travel to Home Park on Saturday was anticipated to be hazardous. Additionally, the League Two encounter between Newport and Carlisle has also been called off. Storm Darragh is projected to impact the UK starting Friday, with amber wind warnings issued for Plymouth for Saturday. The highest alert level, a red warning, has been forecast for parts of Devon, indicating a significant risk to individuals journeying to attend the game. Similarly, sections of Wales are subject to a red weather warning, leading the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) to postpone all domestic football and rugby matches scheduled for Saturday. Plymouth reported that the Safety Advisory Group had recommended the postponement of their match at Home Park. A statement released by the club explained that the decision was made proactively “to avoid lengthy travel to Plymouth in difficult weather conditions and also in the best interests of supporter safety, as we would never put the safety of fans, staff or players at risk”. The statement further elaborated, “There is a real danger of flying debris and potential falling trees which could cause danger to life, with damage to buildings and homes also a real possibility.” It added that “Roads, bridges and railway lines could also close, and the stadium and surrounding area may be hit by power cuts.” Argyle confirmed that previously purchased tickets for the match will remain valid for the rearranged date. This particular game held significant implications for the lower half of the division, with Argyle positioned one place and two points clear of the relegation zone, and Oxford situated one point and four places above Argyle. Cardiff had initially intended to conduct an inspection on Saturday; however, they stated that the decision to cancel their game was made subsequent to “new advice received from the Met Office, and the recommendations of Cardiff Council and South Wales Police”. Furthermore, planned horse racing events at Sandown Park, Aintree, Chepstow, and Wetherby are also scheduled for precautionary inspections on Saturday morning. The postponed football fixtures include: **Championship:** * Cardiff City v Watford * Plymouth Argyle v Oxford United **League Two:** * Newport County v Carlisle United
