Stiltskin Theatre, a children’s theatre company, has sought assistance following a £30,000 loss incurred when its big top tent was completely destroyed by Storm Darragh. Jacqueline Ball of Stiltskin Theatre described the tent’s destruction on Saturday in Devonport Park, Plymouth, as “quite horrifying”. This financial setback for Stiltskin encompasses the expense of acquiring the big top, revenue from ticket sales for a cancelled performance, and anticipated earnings from its on-site shop and cafe. Despite the setback, Stiltskin is proceeding with a reduced-scale, two-person production, “The Elf Who Lost Christmas,” scheduled to commence this Saturday at the smaller Soapbox Theatre, also located within the park. The theatre company had originally intended to stage two productions, “Guardian of the Golden Griffin” and “The Elf Who Lost Christmas,” within the big top during the period leading up to Christmas. Furthermore, the big top was intended to serve as a focal point for celebrating the theatre company’s tenth anniversary. Even with storm warnings issued, the theatre company stated that there was insufficient time to dismantle the tent. Ms. Ball commented, “The winds were so strong, they just built up and literally ripped the roof off.” She added, “It was quite horrifying to watch it happen.” She also noted that the response to their appeal for support had been “amazing.” According to Ms. Ball, the theatre company is now presenting four shows daily to accommodate all individuals who had purchased tickets for “The Elf Who Lost Christmas.” She further stated, “The team are working really, really hard.” and “They’ve built the auditorium inside, and we’re just getting everything ready for us to launch on Saturday.” Follow BBC Devon on X, Facebook and Instagram.
