South Africa achieved their largest Test victory, defeating Bangladesh in three days, which helps maintain their pursuit of a spot in the World Test Championship final. In Chattogram, the Proteas secured the second Test by an innings and 273 runs. This margin surpassed their prior record victory by 19 runs, which was also against Bangladesh in 2017. Bangladesh, playing as the hosts, commenced day three of their first innings at 38-4. They quickly found themselves at 48-8 before a 103-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam elevated their total to 159. Kagiso Rabada contributed significantly with figures of 5-37. South Africa then enforced the follow-on, dismissing the Tigers for 143 runs in merely 43.4 overs to finalize their win. Left-arm spinners Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy were instrumental, claiming 5-59 and 4-45 respectively, as South Africa clinched a 2-0 series victory. This marks the ninth occasion South Africa has defeated Bangladesh by an innings in only 16 Test matches. South Africa captain Aiden Markram commented on the performance, stating, “I am incredibly proud – that was special.” He further added regarding their World Test Championship aspirations, “Qualifying for the World Test Championship final is a long way away but to be in the mix for the finals is what’s driving us.” This victory elevates South Africa to fourth position in the World Test Championship standings. However, securing wins in their four upcoming home Tests against Sri Lanka and Pakistan between the present time and January would ensure their qualification for the final at Lord’s in June. Achieving three wins and a draw, or even three wins and a single defeat, could potentially be sufficient for qualification, contingent on the outcomes of other ongoing series.
