A learning centre for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) is scheduled to open in a disused library building by September 2026. The former Wokingham library, located on Denmark Street, closed its doors in September 2022 after its services relocated to Carnival Place. Following approval by Wokingham councillors on Thursday, the premises will be refurbished and repurposed as a post-16 SEND hub, designed to support up to 40 individuals. According to the borough council, consultants are set to be appointed in January to commence design work. The forthcoming centre aims to provide support for individuals experiencing autism, moderate learning difficulties, and social, emotional, and mental health challenges. The authority had previously highlighted an “immediate and pressing need” for enhanced provisions catering to teenagers and young people within the locality. It also noted that approximately 400 residents in the borough, aged between 16 and 25, possess an Education and Health Care Plan.
