Italian rider Andrea Iannone is scheduled to return to MotoGP at this week’s Malaysia Grand Prix, marking his first competition since completing a four-year doping suspension. In September, Iannone achieved the distinction of becoming the 19th rider to secure victories in both a MotoGP and a World Superbike race. Iannone will compete for the VR46 Racing Team, owned by Valentino Rossi. He is stepping in for Fabio di Giannantonio, who has traveled back to Rome for shoulder surgery. “I’m honoured that they thought of me and I felt like I had to say yes to this opportunity immediately as soon as it was offered to me,” Iannone stated. He further commented, “The challenge is certainly crazy, complex and demanding, as I haven’t ridden a bike in this category for years and without having done tests or similar.” The 35-year-old Iannone tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid at the 2019 Malaysia Grand Prix, which initially led to an 18-month suspension. The Italian rider subsequently appealed this decision. The Court of Arbitration for Sport later extended the ban to four years, with the suspension officially concluding in December 2023. In February 2024, he resumed racing in the Superbike World Championship, where he secured his maiden win in the series in September. Iannone has consistently maintained his innocence, asserting that his positive test resulted from the accidental ingestion of the prohibited substance through contaminated meat.
