On Sunday, individuals from the Muslim and Jewish communities in Surrey participated in an “interfaith collaboration” to gather contributions for a local food bank. Kawther Hashmi, representing the Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum and the Shah Jahan mosque in Woking, stated: “At a time when unity is so vital, our shared values of compassion and charity shone through.” Liz Sawyer, affiliated with the North West Surrey Synagogue in Weybridge, commented: “It’s so important we all work together to support people in need in our local community. Volunteering together helps build and strengthen relationships.” The collective effort, which benefited the Runnymede Foodbank, involved gathering provisions like tins, deodorant, and Christmas treats outside the Morrisons and Waitrose supermarkets situated in Weybridge. Ms Hashmi further remarked: “Supporting the Runnymede Foodbank highlights how interfaith collaboration can make a real difference in our community.” The Runnymede Foodbank operates branches in Egham, Englefield Green, Chertsey, Addlestone, and Weybridge. The organization is currently seeking contributions of food and household items, with a specific need for washing-up liquid and antibacterial spray.
