Swansea City’s head coach, Luke Williams, has stated that Ben Cabango and Harry Darling form a central defensive partnership that is arguably unmatched in the Championship. Both players, Darling and Cabango, have been recognized as key performers for Swansea this season. Cabango, a 24-year-old Wales international, and Darling, 25, who previously played for MK Dons, have participated in every minute of Swansea’s matches in the second tier throughout the current season. Williams’ squad has allowed opponents to score only nine goals across 14 league fixtures thus far, highlighting their defensive strength as a crucial factor in their promising beginning to the 2024-25 campaign. When questioned about the quality of the Cabango-Darling partnership within the Championship, Williams responded: “I think you can argue that. I think you can argue that on numbers, the clean sheets we have had and how few goals we have conceded.” He added, “And you can also argue that based on watching with your naked eye how we play.” Williams noted that Cabango’s and Darling’s contributions are particularly commendable considering the current uncertainty surrounding both players’ futures. Swansea aims for both defensive stalwarts to agree to new contracts; however, under present circumstances, they are slated to become free agents upon the expiration of their current agreements at the conclusion of the season. Last month, Williams indicated that the club was working to “build bridges” with Cabango and Darling, along with their respective agents, following a delay in contract discussions. Regarding the ongoing discussions, Williams commented: “I don’t know exactly where we are at. I am concentrating on them being prepared for the games and they are doing incredibly. They are not lacking any motivation or playing like they are trying to get away.” He further added, “They deserve to be respected for the difficult situation they are in, because there’s uncertainty around their contracts and it’s public, everyone knows.” Cabango, a product of Swansea’s academy, has accumulated 198 senior appearances and scored 10 goals. Darling, who transferred to the Welsh club from MK Dons in 2022, has netted seven times in 87 matches. The duo is expected to feature together again as Swansea pursues a third consecutive league victory against Burnley this Sunday.
