Law enforcement officials have identified the man who succumbed to severe injuries after being struck by a bus in Edinburgh city centre. Michael Leneghan, 74, died in the city’s bustling Cowgate area on Saturday, an incident witnessed by people on a street known for its late-night bars and nightclubs. Police Scotland appealed to the public to refrain from reposting images or videos from the scene, citing respect for Mr. Leneghan’s family. His family, in turn, extended thanks to the public and emergency services for their actions and requested privacy. Mr. Leneghan was a pedestrian when the incident occurred. In the aftermath, officers established a cordon that covered a substantial section of the street. Authorities also erected sheets on the South Bridge to obscure the view of the Cowgate below. Sergeant Paul Ewing, of the Edinburgh road policing unit, stated: “Our thoughts remain with Michael’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by this tragic incident.“We have already spoken to a number of people who were in the area at the time and work is ongoing to check public and private CCTV footage.” Multiple individuals reportedly observed the event before bars, clubs, and hotels within the cordoned area were closed prematurely. Police Scotland confirmed that its inquiry is continuing. Despite police warnings against viewing or reposting the content, visual content and video recordings from the location circulated extensively across social media platforms. In a statement, Mr. Leneghan’s family conveyed: “We wish to thank all the members of the public and emergency services involved. “We would now ask for privacy at this time.”
