Residents of a town have received a warning to remain vigilant against suspicious phone calls, following an incident where a woman was “held to ransom by cold and calculating scammers.” According to Cheshire Police, the 69-year-old victim transferred £1,000 to the perpetrators on Wednesday. This occurred after she received a call threatening harm to her son if the money was not dispatched. PC Matthew Jennings stated that the scammers “created a sense of panic,” leading the woman, who resides in Latchford, Warrington, to believe she had no alternative course of action. He added, “Those who commit courier fraud can be very convincing, but there are several ways to prevent fraud.” The police force has released details of this event to provide advice on how elderly or vulnerable individuals can safeguard themselves from similar scams. This guidance includes refraining from sharing personal or financial details with unknown individuals, terminating calls from suspicious numbers, and avoiding the withdrawal of significant amounts of cash based on directives from those claiming to represent the police or a bank. PC Jennings encouraged the public to disseminate this advice among “elderly or vulnerable family members or friends to ensure they don’t become victims themselves.” The woman initially received a text message from an unidentified number, purporting to be from her son and indicating he was in distress and required money. Subsequently, a call came from a separate number where the scammers insisted she transfer the funds, threatening harm to her son, even though he was not actually in any peril. PC Jennings described the event as a “shocking incident,” highlighting how scammers deceived the woman into believing she was acting to secure her son’s safety.
